Empowering your workforce, driving your success

HR Insights April 2025

From the Director

Recruitment is often viewed as a transactional process — a CV, a shortlist, a role filled. But at Strategic HR, we see it differently. We believe recruitment is the foundation for long-term business success.

It's about aligning people with purpose, finding the right cultural fit, and setting new team members up for success from day one. It’s not just about filling roles — it’s about building resilient, high-performing teams that grow with your business.

That’s why our recruitment services are led by certified HR professionals, not salespeople. We take the time to understand your business, your values, and your goals — because great hiring decisions don’t happen by chance. They happen by design.

As always, we’re here to help. If you have any HR concerns or need expert guidance, feel free to reach out.

AI-Generated Resumes: The Risks in Hiring & How to Protect Your Business

HR Tips and Insights

Why Reference Checks Matters

Reference checks are one of the most invaluable steps in the the recruitment process, crucial for making informed hiring decisions. While interviews and CVs can show you what a candidate wants you to see, reference checks help uncover how they’ve performed in the real world.

Reference checks matter because they:

     Validate what you've been told

Reference checks confirm whether a candidate’s claims about their experience, achievements, and responsibilities are accurate and reliable.

Offer insight into behaviour and attitude
A resume can’t tell you if someone shows up on time, works well under pressure, or is a good team player — but a past manager can highlight concerns that may not be obvious upfront.
     Reveal cultural fit
Consistent positive feedback across different roles suggests strong character and work ethic, indicating whether the candidate will align with your company values and culture. Likewise, repeated concerns can flag potential risks.
     Strengthen onboarding
By understanding a new hire’s strengths and development areas in advance, you can tailor onboarding to set them up for success from day one.
     Reduce risk
A poor hiring decision can impact team morale, productivity, and even your bottom line. Reference checks help you make informed, confident decisions.

When done properly, reference checks can be a powerful decision-making tool, not just a formality. However, always be mindful of legal and compliance considerations when conducting reference checks. Ignoring them can lead to privacy breaches, discrimination claims, or even reputational damage for your business.

Always obtain a candidate's consent before contacting referees.
Avoid questions or judgements that relate to age, gender, race,     disability, marital status, pregnancy, religion, or sexual orientation         (protected attributes under the Fair Work Act 2009 and state laws).

Need help with reference checks that go beyond the basics? Our recruitment process includes professional reference checking — because hiring well starts with knowing more. Let Strategic HR make your next hire the right one.

New Privacy Laws - Update

While there has been significant discussion about the introduction of a new statutory tort for serious invasions of privacy-proposed to take effect from 10 June 2025, no legislative changes have been formally enacted yet.

As communicated in our March newsletter, this potential reform could have far-reaching implications for how businesses manage personal information and workplace privacy.

At Strategic HR, we are staying across all updates and will provide further guidance and practical advice when formal changes are confirmed. In the meantime, we strongly encourage business owners and managers to proactively review their current privacy practices and ensure they are positioned to respond to any forthcoming legislative changes.
